Medicare Advantage (MA) plans cover costs that original Medicare does not. MA plans combine Parts A and B and gives you additional benefits for vision, dental, hearing and prescription drugs. These plans are only offered through private insurance companies, and come in two varieties: HMO and PPO.
Also referred to as Medigap, Medicare Supplements offer additional coverage to cover some services not covered by Original Medicare A and B.
Medicare Part D (aka Prescription Drug Plan or “PDP”)
Part D, also referred to as Prescription Drug Plan or PDP, is a standalone prescription drug coverage provided by private insurance companies. If you have original A and B or a Medicare supplement plan, you may need a Part D plan to cover your prescription drug costs.
Life insurance protects those who depend on you for financial support. If you die prematurely, life insurance provides your dependents with ongoing income to replace yours.
Unfortunately, long-term care isn’t a very helpful name for this type of insurance because you may actually only need it for a short period of time. Be that as it may, you are said to need “long-term care” if due to age, mental or physical illness, or injury, you:
- have trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating, or making decisions that affect your everyday life or,
- you can’t do two or more of the following six Activities of Daily Living (ADLs): eating, bathing, dressing, toileting or continence, and/or transferring (e.g., getting out of a chair or out of bed).
Assistance with ADLs, called “custodial care,” is sometimes confused with “skilled care” Skilled care means medical, nursing, or rehabilitative services, including help taking medicine, undergoing testing (e.g. blood pressure), or other similar services. It’s important to understand the difference because generally Medicare and most private health insurance don’t pay for custodial care.
Final expense insurance can provide thousands of dollars to pay for a basic funeral service, casket, cemetery plot and flowers. Life insurance can provide funeral and burial coverage, but you may not have life insurance, your policy may not cover final expenses or, at your current stage in life, a life insurance policy may be too expensive for you. Final expense insurance allows you to take care of these expenses rather than leave them for your family members to handle.
